How Do You Help Your Child Sound Out Words?
In my classroom experience, I've found that pairing strategies with different animals helps the students to remember what to do! This was a great success with both parents and students! Enjoy!
1. Say the beginning sound and read on. (Lips the Fish)
2. Spell it out loud
3. Look for picture clues (Eagle Eye)
4. Break words into chunks (Chunky Monkey)
5. Look for little words inside big words
6. Look for letter patterns
7. Backtrack. Read it again (Tryin’ Lion)
8. Does it sound right?
9. Does it make sense?
10. Skip it, read on, then go back and read it again. (Skippy Frog)
11. Stretch it out (Stretchy Snake)
12. Look for popcorn and PWIM words
13. Look for word families
14. Ask for help! (Helpful Kangaroo)
15. Flip the vowel sound (Flippy the Dolphin)
